Changes in the contemporary religious field - key word are religious supermarket, generation of seekers, spiritual quest, irreverent spiritual quest - have implications not only for conversion itself, but call for a special focus on deconversion. Increasing religious mobility and permeability of religious organisations encourage a growing number of people to deconvert from all types of religious orientations. But research on the processes of deconversion and their outcomes is only begining. Therefore we think that, After a century of research on conversion, especially in the psychology of religion, it is time for research on deconversion.

Here is our contribution to deconversion research:

The Bielefeld-based Cross-cultural Deconversion Project is presented on our CIRRuS web site in some detail: we give and overview, summarize qualitative and quantitative results, the methods and the research team.

Results in more detail will be published in a new book (scheduled to appear in November 2008)

and the pilot study, completed in 1998: Enquete Project Fundamentalism
